You all know how much I love vintage print greeting cards. Besides the cool lithography and artwork, the stories these pieces tell us about our history fascinates me. While browsing through hundreds of vintage Thanksgiving cards, I noticed some interesting trends. For instance, children and the turkey were a common theme, and then the turkey as transportation was interesting. Of course, food and family were popular, and I’ll be sharing some of those in a later post.
The recurring theme that kind of caught me by surprise? The Red, White & Blue! Apparently, the connection between Patriotism and Thanksgiving was quite strong one hundred years ago! Here’s a big collage of patriotic-themed cards featuring the flag, the eagle, and Uncle Sam sharing the spotlight with the turkey. It’s fun viewing these, particularly right after Veteran’s Day here in the United States!
